Once you get over fifty five or sixty miles an hour, every ten miles an hour faster you go, your fuel economy is reduced by about four miles a gallon ... .

It’s all about wind resistance and air flow around the vehicle; it’s just that the faster you go, the harder it is for your car to push aside all that air ... and the build up of air in front of you and that low pressure area behind your car creates something like a suction thats basically pulling back on your car ... .

So for a typical family sedan ... that gets twenty eight miles a gallon on the highway, if you’re going, let’s say sixty five to seventy miles an hour, that might drop to twenty four miles a gallon; that’s roughly equivalent to paying fifty four cents a gallon more for gas.

To me this is a natural learning situation, so I would pretty much let ‘em go to bed whenever they wanted to.

Now, if they have a little job ... and they’ve got to be there by ten o’clock in the morning ... and they sleep through and don’t go to the job ... then they don’t hold that job ... .

You want to give kids as much freedom as you can in areas that are not vital to their survival.

It depends on two things; what your tolerance is (some people cannot tolerate ants being inside), and the other thing is how bad is your ant problem ... .

I’m not talking about scouts, where you’d have three or four you see, I’d say that’s not worth doing anything about.

But if you have large trails of ants on a regular basis, that’s when you have to make a decision. ‘Okay, can I live with this and just use soap and water to kill that trail of ants, and then probably have to do it again tomorrow, or, do I need to get somebody out here to take care of this problem’?

So, actually, Summer is a huge opportunity, if you look at it that way, for kids to learn ... .

It’s ... [a problem] if you have a frequency problem that cannot be corrected, like you have a doberman that seems to bite every ... person ... and you don’t want to get a new dog.

Those things are a problem; liability frequency type issues. Slip and falls on driveways, that’s a problem. But property things that have been rectified, frozen pipes, you put in a temperature monitor. Your house was robbed, you put in a central station alarm.

Things like that that are fixed just work out great, and other companies are excited to take that risk, with no penalty to do it.

One of the findings ... in the physician patient literature is something called ‘doorknob comments’; that patients don’t talk about their main concern with their physician .... And then as the physician is leaving ... they say, ‘Oh, but there’s this one other thing”. And usually that one other thing is the most serious of all ... .

So then the physician has to get back in, because usually by this point the physician has mentally closed down the file ... is walking to leave, and now has to come back in ... .

Get those comments in earlier, so that you have time to talk about them.

You can make a case that the reliance of contemporary architecture on materials to shed water and to resist rot is inherently flawed, because ... traditional architecture used gravity and shadow and operable windows to actually defeat the aging and rotting process.

But ... contemporary architecture is special because it is the triumph of the human mind to overcome the natural limitations of a site, but then exploit them.

And if you can find your way clear to living, really, in the mind of a designer ... . If you can feel comfortable having this dynamic dance with somebody’s conception of what a house, or any architecture, and be, then the things you discover in the years you live in a contemporary house are continually enriching your life every day, and reinventing how you look at the world; because you’re seeing it through a lens which, intentionally, has never been looked through before.

Ranches ... are desirable by many different types of buyers.

They are an entry into single family living for first time home buyers. They give people a little more elbow room than they’ve had in an apartment.

And these days, given the fact that we of the ‘baby boomer’ generation are doing our aging thing, people love the fact that they have first floor living again ... .

They are adaptable to many different types of family ... (but) the interesting thing about a 1952 aged garage is it’s small, it’s narrow, and it’s not as deep as we need.

And I have people come in with tape measures to see if their van or their SUV will fit.
